Purvis Short, a Hattiesburg native born on July 2, 1957, is a basketball legend whose scoring ability and dedication to the game left a lasting impact on the sport. His journey began at Blair High School in Hattiesburg, where he showcased his talent as a standout athlete. As a leader on the court, Short guided Blair High to a state championship in 1974, cementing his status as one of Mississippi's top high school players. His success at Blair High set the foundation for a remarkable basketball career.

After graduating in 1974, Short continued his dominance at Jackson State University, where he became the school's all-time leading scorer. A two-time Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Player of the Year (1977, 1978), he was known for his ability to take over games with his signature high-arching jump shot. His exceptional college career led to his selection as the fifth overall pick in the 1978 NBA Draft by the Golden State Warriors.

Short enjoyed a 12-season NBA career, playing for the Golden State Warriors, Houston Rockets, and New Jersey Nets. Over his career, he scored more than 14,000 points and averaged 17.3 points per game. One of his most legendary performances came in 1984 when he dropped 59 points against the New Jersey Nets, one of the highest-scoring games in the history of the NBA.

Beyond the court, Short dedicated himself to helping athletes prepare for life after basketball. As the director of the NBA Players Association's Department of Player Programs, he played a crucial role in supporting players' transitions and personal development. His contributions to basketball were recognized in 1999 when he was inducted into the inaugural class of the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame.

This Black History Month, we honor Purvis Short, a Blair High School champion and NBA trailblazer who advocates for athletes beyond the game. His legacy continues to inspire the next generation of players from Hattiesburg and beyond.
